Buzzing at 1st fret

Post by Bob Snelgrove »

Side note to my ringing issue on my Franklin.

I have to push really hard on the higher strings to make it stop buzzing. Checked my push pull and with just the bar weight, there are no buzzing issues on either neck.

Are the nut rollers all same size?
Or are they a gauged set of nut rollers?
Did this problem come up all at once?
Have the nut rollers been removed for cleaning or lubing?
Measuring the roller groves with a micrometer or dial caliber, May help find the problem rollers.

From your description of the problem 1 or more strings are lower than the string beside it.

Good Luck finding the problem and cure. Happy Steelin.

I use a straight edge across several 6-string frets to find leveling issues - I suspect one could do the same across the strings at the roller to make sure all the strings are level and in the same plane.

I had this problem with a used steel guitar I had purchased. Upon close inspection (per Bobby's comments) I could see that the guitar had gauged rollers, which were all misplaced.

Once I removed them, measured them, and put them back on in the correct order all was well. Not perfect, but much much better.
