Ever remove a Mullen changer axle?

Post by Ron Pruter »

After talking to Mike at Mullen, sounds like they are pressed in real tight. I'm thinking arbor press and a jig. Anyone ever did this? ShoBuds and Emmons slid right out without any special tools. RP

Since Mullen no longer manufactures the PRP changer, this may be good info on the forum. I currently have a prp changer that I thought could easily be cleaned up by disassembly. I have a 3 ton arbor press and do not feel good about turning a clean up job into damaged scrap. Ill work around this, clean what I can and move on. Obviously Mullen made major changes to the RP and G2 . Installing hex rods for the bell cranks is a huge hassle to add knee levers on the prp's. Just thought it would be a good time to clean. 12 years after Rons original post, Anyone ever disassemble a Mullen changer?

I added 4 KLs to a PRP almost 30 yrs. ago. Mullen supplied hex cross rods that were joined with a lap joint and a bolt to join them together. If you can imagine about an in. flat cut right down the center of one piece and a tongue the same length on the mating piece.

I don't know if they have any of those parts anymore, but I made a couple myself using some stainless hex rod....could be done with alum provided the correct size can be found.

Actually, square or round cross shafts could be done this way too for guitars that have a center rail. Even for those where you have to cut the shaft. Would just need 1 half piece of longer shaft. Example: Emmons all pull, Derby etc.

Concerning axle removal, have no experience there.

As I was the original poster, this is good example to all of us. By that I mean, if you know something special and don't share the info, there's a possibility the info will never be known. Ron

I will be finding out before long.
I bought a Mullen S12 PRP Ser. Number 2842 last fall. It was built in 1997. I have to reverse A&C pedals, And 4 knee levers. To change it from Emmons to Day/Jeff Newman Universal set up.
With 6 pulls to change, And the guitar being 28 years old and called home right on coast of Maine. It needs a complete tear down.

A quick heat up of the aluminum pillow block with a heat gun, And a shot of Kano-Croil will be my starting point. Then precede from there.

Here is my mullen changer. Mullen made these where its very hard to tell where the axle is and the aluminum stand.
