I recently took delivery on a Spirit Model D-10 from Bill & Gary. They went the extra mile to get me exactly what I wanted. I can honestly say these guitars are one of the best in the market. Everything you hear about the sustain, tone between the 12th & 24th frets, smooth mechanics, etc., it's all true. Gary put some TT pickups that Jerry wound to my specs. (20.5 kohms E9th & 21.5 kohms C6th) and this guitar has the best tone of any steel I have played. It really does play like butter and the guitar does not have any tuning issues.

I have considered a Rains for the past 2-3 years. A few steels later and I wonder why I waited so long. Thanks to Bill Simmons who sent me home with a Rains to test drive. If you get a chance to play one, it will sell itself. I really think I have finished my quest for the right guitar. The guitar is set up perfectly for my legs. The LKV is finally located where I can actually use it. It's at the rear of the cabinet.

Final note, when Gary was finishing the guitar, he called me about 3-4 times (not including my phone calls) touching base on how my setup was working out.

Thanks to the "Rains Steel Guitar" folks! :D

Tims New Rains

Post by Doc Rickles »

Hey Tim,
I know you're enjoying your New Rains. I bought a Magnum because it is light and fits me and it sounds great. I have my Rains up for sale and really hope no one buys it. It plays smooth as butter, sounds like a dream, prettiest guitar I,ve ever owned. They are the best but a little heavy for me so I went to the SD 10. Enjoy the New Rains. Mine gets prettier everyday.
Blessings to you,
Doc

I can certainly attest to the fact of the playabilty and the exquisite tone that comes from it is incredible. I wish I were going to Dallas for the show, too. I would love to show off my "RAINS" that I got from Carr's Steel Guitar Shop in Seminary, MS. Y'all have fun. HAL

Rains

Post by Doc Rickles »

Hi Hal,
Not only are Rains great guitars but Rains people are great people. I bought mine from Billy Carr in Seminary also. Bill Simmons has helped me without reservation. Both he and Billy are great friends. I have three hero's in this business and they are in my "Hall of Fame". Billy Carr, Bill Simmons, and Bobbe Seymour. They have all been there for an old man just beginning in steel playing.I could go on and on with wonderful people in this forum. Thanks to all of them for encouraging me.
Hal, we'll just have to stay home and pray for all these special people.

Hey all you 'Simmons' clan make sure to come and see me at the RAINS booth Friday/Saturday. Wish my buddy Bob Simmons could make it. By the way, Bob makes one super steel guitar called the "SIMMONS STEEL GUITAR"...check out his website.

Tim Bridges...man you have a real unique Rains! I need to come by and hear you play it soon when things slow down a bit!

Doc Rickles...wish you were coming too -- so enjoy picking with ya...by the way, I pick up my 4th Rains which will be the good looking 'pecan mica' just like yours.

Well, Bill Cook, Jim Walker and I will be leaving Montgomery tomorrow night for Dallas so some of the "Alabama Gang" is on the way! Albert and Debbie Talley and their team really put together one great show!!!!!

Will miss you Charlie! Your RAINS and new JACKSON Steels are two of the nicest I've seen.

By the way, one of my steel guitar hero's --Norm Hamlit -- stop by our Rains Booth today and he showed me the correct way to play his great instrumental -- "Hammin It Up". What a terrific and humble person too!!!

Come on by the RAINS Booth and let's pick a little with another great -- Gary Carpenter...

Doc Rickles sells himself short. 31 years ago, He and I worked together in VietNam, and a finer entertainer you wouldn't find anywhere. We were together for a year, and true he didn't play steel, but he is in no way new to a Tele, nor to the stage.
To me he was "Ricky"
We finally got to see each other again last year at St Louis, A finer guy, you'll never find.

THANKS!!

Post by Bill Simmons »

What an incredible weekend! It was such a delight to meet so many Rains players; see my old friends; and meet new friends. It went soooo fast and it is now a wonderful memory.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and jamming and talking at our Rains booth. I'm always amazed at the incredible talent that may not get the opportunity to play the main stage but are terrific players!!

Special thanks to my dear friend Johnny Cox for borrowing me his N-112 amp with the TX flag on the grill!! Johnny, you should talk with Mike Brown about doing a special "Texas N-112" model as a lot of guys loved the TX flag on the grill! (Sorry we missed out on our annual ice-cream slurge)

Oh yes, thanks to my friend FRED JUSTICE for teaching me that great lick!! Not only is he one of the finest players, but is building incredible cases. Everyone needing any type of case should call "Uncle Fred"!

What a good time! Gary Carpenter, Bill Simmons and staff had their work cut out for them and they did a wonderful job. The Rains booth was quite busy! It was great to see the fine players from all over the world visiting and playing. I myself spent sometime in the booth telling folks how and why I loved my Rains Pedal Steel Guitar! Special Thanks to Gary Carpenter for my *New* Valley Pecan Mica SD10. The craftsmanship and beauty are second to none. The tone is Angelic. I think that Bill Simmons must have put his blessings upon it. Ha! I can hardly wait to hang out in the Rains booth next year!
