I started using a 12 string bar

Post by Larry Behm »

I play a 10 string steel, (54 years). I started using a 12 string bar a few months back, I feel better balance and a slightly better tone on the lower strings. You?

If you have long fingers. With the longer bar, The back end of the bar is trapped in the pocket between your thumb, palm and index finger, Giving better control, Of the bar tip with thumb and index finger.
I got a 1 " x 3 3/4" with a S12 guitar about 7 years ago. Only bar I use now.

When I first started trying to play pedal steel, I struggled with controlling the normal 10 string bar. I switched to a 1” 12 string bar shortly thereafter, and have been using 12 string bars on pedal steel for over 25 years. I use a Long Dawg when playing resonator guitar and a 3/4” bar on lap steel.

I think that '12-string bar' is a bit of a misnomer. Your preferred bar length depends on the size of your hand, not the number of strings you're trying to cover. I play a uni 12 with a regular bar.
I have average hands and no musical reason to strum all 12 strings.

Bobby--or others--who makes a 1" by 3 3/4" bar?

I see that BJS makes one that is 1" by 9/16 . . . . .

Dunlop 921 is 1" x 3 3/4.

I'm looking for 7/8" x 3 3/4?

JayDee's been using one. He says it gives him more bar "real estate" when doing slants.

The (12 string) 1" X 3 3/4" bar that is my favorite bar, Is not a factory standard 11.5oz bar. The bar has been drilled out to weigh 9.7oz. Makes fast moves up and down neck, More accurate, And less stress on left hand.
